It Gets Worse …

… before it gets better.

Have you ever been in a dip? You know, where everything just seems a little harder, your energy is low, work takes longer, and you feel overwhelmed by things that used to get you energized?

Yeah, me too.

And there are ways of dealing with it: shorter time horizons, cutting back, riding the wave.

And they work. But not right away.

That’s the whole point of a dip. It’s hard. If you could just wave a magical wand and suddenly be energized and excited to tackle new challenges well, it wouldn’t be a dip.

And so when you do your best to ride it out, it will get harder before it gets easier.

You can blame your brain. It’s set up to try to conserve energy. Well before you reach your limits it induces the dip in order to protect you. The problem is that you still have plenty I reserves that you’re not tapping.

Your brain needs some proof that what you are doing is really important enough to risk raiding your reserves.

So you have to stick with it, like your life depends on it.

Your brain understands survival. Once it’s convinced that you need the reserves and you won’t back down, they’ll become available.

You can call it a second wind if you want.
