The Chaos of Summer

As you know, I’m gone camping.

So I wrote this before leaving. The camping trip will be good, because life has been crazy busy.

But the camping trip is also part of the problem.

Summer has been crazy because it’s less structured than during the school year.

Vacations, summer jobs for the older kids, swimming lessons, a getaway, neighborhood parties, bored kids, etc.

Chaos reigns.

And so, life is busy.

When that happens a couple things help. Daily planning , of course, to stay on top of the stuff that needs to happen.

Journaling is a life saver, to regularly get my thoughts out and consider what is working and what isn’t.

Having an end zone is important. For me, there are two end zones: after this camping trip, and when school starts back up.

The camping trip is our last trip. We have no further plans to leave home this summer. So it’ll be nice to settle in, catch up on yard work, put the house back in order.

And the kids go back to school in three weeks. Then structure will be reimposed. It may be a bit painful. But with it comes order, expectations that aren’t constantly unmet, and kids who are too busy to constantly upend our plans.

So, here’s to an end to the chaos of summer.
